As a travel photographer, I’m always searching for unique, immersive wildlife encounters that allow me to capture raw, candid moments. Recently, I stepped past the glass exhibits to take part in their famous Penguin Feeding Experience—and it is safe to say it’s a must-do for anyone visiting Fife.
Here is what it’s really like to feed the resident Humboldt penguins, alongside my top photography tips for capturing the moment!

The aquarium’s feeding experiences give you behind-the-scenes access that regular admission doesn't cover. Led by a highly knowledgeable keeper, you get to step right into the enclosure with their colony of playful Humboldt penguins.
Armed with a bucket of fresh fish, you learn about the individual personalities of the colony, their conservation status in the wild, and—most importantly—how to hand-feed these incredibly charismatic birds.
The Highlights: You are inches away from the penguins. They aren't shy; they will waddle right up to your feet, making it an incredibly intimate wildlife encounter.

📸 A Photographer’s Guide to Capturing the Feeding Experience
Photographing animals in motion is always a fun challenge, but doing it while trying to balance a bucket of fish requires a bit of strategy! If you are taking a camera along, here is how to get the perfect shots:
1. Go Wide and Get Low
Penguins are short, and looking down at them from standing height can make your images look like standard snapshots. Crouch down to their eye level. Getting low creates a dramatic perspective, separates the penguin from the background, and makes the viewer feel like they are right there in the enclosure with you. Use a wide-angle lens (like a 24-70mm) to capture both the penguin and your own reaction.
2. Freeze the Action (Shutter Speed is Key)
When the fish bucket comes out, the penguins move fast! They waddle, hop, and shake their feathers in excitement. To avoid blurry shots, switch your camera to Shutter Priority mode or manual, and ensure your shutter speed is set to at least 1/500s or faster. If you are capturing them diving into the water, push it up to 1/1000s.
3. Capture the Details
Don't just take wide shots of the whole enclosure. Zoom in or move close to capture the textures: the sleek, waterproof pattern of their feathers, the bright pink patches around their eyes, and the splash of water as they grab a fish.
Disclaimer: I wasn't sure what to expect and only took my mobile phone, which has a variety of camera settings, alongside a water pouch. It allowed me to have my hands free while holding the bucket of fish/feeding the penguins, and later washable from fish slime/scales.

Book in Advance: Because these experiences are small and intimate, slots fill up very fast, especially during the summer months and school holidays.
Dress for the Weather: The enclosure is outdoors right on the coast, so it can get incredibly windy. Wear sturdy, non-slip waterproof footwear (wellies are ideal, as you need to step into a waterbath. We took ours in a plastic bag to change into, and the keeper kindly kept our shoes in a locker).
Explore the Rest: Your feeding ticket includes full access to the rest of the aquarium. Don’t miss the meerkats, the British sharks, and the playful otters!
