Top Natural & Alpine Photography Spots in Almaty

Big Almaty Lake (Үлкен Алматы көлі)

  • The Shot: The iconic, milky-turquoise water framed by jagged peaks.

    
    

  • Photography Tip: Best photographed in the morning light. You must carry your passport at all times while visiting Big Almaty Lake as located within a restricted border zone near Kyrgystan. No additional permits are required if visiting the main viewing areas, but if venturing deeper into the remote mountain trails, additional clearance may be required. Getting closer than 100 metres to the water is prohibited, as a water conservation area. If taking one of the tours from Almaty, you may have to walk a few minutes from the coach to the viewing point.

  • The Shot: Take the multi-stage cable car up to 3,200 meters for dramatic ridge lines and sweeping views of the Zailiyskiy Alatau range.

    
    

  • Photography Tip: Shoot long-lens compression shots of the ski trails or the massive Medeu outdoor ice rink down below

Kok Tobe Hill (The Green Hill)

• The Shot: The Almaty city skyline illuminated at sunset with the TV tower cutting through the clouds.

  
  

• Photography Tip:

  Ride the vintage cable car up from the city centre just before the golden hour. Allow at least an hour to two hours for boarding the cable car as the queue can be long and walking round to the viewing area! Sunset times vary throughout the year from 5pm in mid-winter to 8.30pm in mid-summer. We visited in mid-August for sunset photographs taking place at around 6pm. Highly recommend a delicious meal (Horenso with chicken & spinach noodles) on the terrace in the adjacent restaurant (Alatau Mill) with less crowds and more photo opportunities of twinkling evening lights.

Urban, Architectural & Cultural Photo Spots

• Ascension Cathedral (Zenkov Cathedral) & Panfilov Park

  
  

  • The Shot: One of the world's tallest all-wooden structures (no nails), painted in bright pastel yellows, pinks, and golds.

    
    

  • Photography Tip: Capture the scale by framing the cathedral through the surrounding grove of trees in Panfilov Park.

  • The Shot: Vibrant, candid street photography. Rows of colorful spices, stacked dried fruits, and local vendors selling traditional Kazakh horse meat.

    
    

  • Photography Tip: Ask permission before taking close-up portraits of vendors; wide-angle environmental portraits work beautifully here.

• The Shot: The underground architecture of the Almaty Metro (especially Raiymbek Batyr and Baikonur stations) featuring Soviet-era mosaics and futuristic themes.

Charyn Canyon & Kolsai Lakes

  • The Shot: Deep red rock formations mimicking the American Southwest, followed by deep green alpine lakes reflecting massive pine forests. We didn't have time to explore more on foot by going down to the bottom of the canyon. If you can, allow more time to do this.

    
    

  • Photography Tip: Advise a 2-day excursion if you would like to capture both sunrise and sunset across the canyon ridges. We did both the canyon and Kolsai Lake on the same day, and it was a 16-hour day! You might also like to visit the sunken forest at Lake Kaindy.

Almaty Travel Photography Tips & Practical Logistics

• Best Time of Year for Photography: Spring (apple blossoms) and autumn (deep golden foliage against snow peaks) are the premier seasons.

  
  

• Getting Around with Camera Gear: Local ride-hailing app (Yandex Go) for getting to trailheads and city spots is easy to use, cabs are readily available and inexpensive. Opt for luxury cars to get seatbelts and air conditioning. Download the app before travel and add payment method when in Kazakhstan. Roads can be busy at peak times!

  
  

• Gear Recommendations: Camera gear can be very heavy. I recommend a versatile 24-70mm lens for city/market exploration and a 70-200mm telephoto lens to capture mountain scale. Disclaimer: On this trip, I solely used my Samsung Galaxy A53 Phone Camera.
