The Top Five Places In Edinburgh To Enjoy A Hot Chocolate

Happy World Hot Chocolate Day! If you have been following me for a while, you will know I am very passionate about chocolate. Every opportunity to try a new brand of chocolate, a chocolate experience, or to visit a cafe with a great hot chocolate. Here are my top five places in Edinburgh to enjoy a hot chocolate.

The award-winning family-run business established by Michelle Philips in 2012 has eight locations across Edinburgh including Mimi's Little Bakehouse inside the City Art Centre, Mimi's Little Bakehouse, Canongate, Mimi's Bakehouse at the Shore, Mimi's Little Bakehouse, Lauriston Castle, Mimi's Bakehouse, Comely Bank, Mimi's Bakehouse, Corstorphine, Mimi's Bakehouse Head Quarters, Granton and Mimi's Bakehouse, Fort Kinaird (temporarily closed). Each offers different services from delicious bakes to scrumptious afternoon teas. Mimi's Bakehouse celebrates with a drink of the month. This month it's Chocolate Chai Yum!

Premium confectior Hotel Chocolate (established 2004) was an independent chocolate retailer owned by Angus Thirlwell and his fellow co-founder, Peter Harris. Until last November (2023), now owned by Mars to enable global expansion. Currently with three locations across Edinburgh including Fredrick Street, St James Quarter, and Fort Kinnaird. I love the seasonal hot chocolates from Easter hot chocolate to blood orange for Halloween. Did you know if you sign up to be a V.I.P. you will receive a £5 gift for your birthday?

The Marshmallow Lady was founded and is independently owned by the lovely Nicole (2010). Located on Rodney Street, it is well worth a visit! The shop has a wide range of fresh marshmallows with flavours including Irn Bru, Whisky, After Eight, Churro (Cinnamon), and many more. Highly recommend one of the flavoured giant toasted marshmallows served with a steaming hot chocolate. You can also buy the luxury chocolate flakes to indulge in hot chocolate at home too. Costa Coffee hot chocolate is nice but did you know you can enjoy it with a view across Princes Street, looking up to Edinburgh Castle? The entrance is located on Hanover Street.

The Ensign Ewart (independently owned) is located on The Royal Mile up towards Edinburgh Castle. The pub has a rich history dating back to 1680! With wooden beams, a rare open fire, and bags of charm, the highest pub in Edinburgh is worth a visit. After walking up there, you deserve a treat. Named after Charles Ewart, a sergeant in the Royal Scots Greys (cavalry regiment of the British Army from 1707 until 1971) stationed at Edinburgh Castle. Joining at 20 years old in 1789, he fought at the Battle of Waterloo, claiming one of the French Eagle Standard's.
